The goal of the EnWoT workshop is to bring the attention of researchers to the opportunities and challenges involved in engineering a web of things. Web technologies (e.g., HTML, JavaScript, Ajax, PHP, Ruby) can be used to build applications involving smart things, on the other hand well-known Web mechanisms are available to interact with and share these devices. The call for contribution for the workshop addressed architectural styles and patterns that allow real-world objects to be part of the World Wide Web which fit with the semantic discovery approach being develop within VICINITY.

The CERTH-ITI Open Day is an open workshop organized by the Information Technologies Institute (ITI) of CERTH every year for the presentation of its achievements to the public, businesses, universities and local organizations.

The participation in the CERTH-ITI Open Day Workshop consisted on the presentation, among several projects, of the VICINITY project describing its main concepts, capabilities, and provided services, presenting also the pilot installations (occupancy sensors, medical devices) inside the Smart house and in the ITI-building.

The Central Union of Municipalities in Greece (KEDE) organized the first Application Development Marathon on technological and operational innovation in the broader field of smart cities, called CITY CHALLENGE - crowdhackathon #smartcity. The conference was focused on technological and administrative innovation for smart cities where participants developed pilot services and applications solving problems that local authorities face. The scope was creative human capital to be mobilized, creativity and youth entrepreneurship to be strengthened.

The ITG FA3.3 (Focus Group 3.3) is a group of specialists in the field of communication technologies. Participants are mostly working in (telecommunication) industry or academics. Their focus is on Communication media, Communication technologies, Measurement- and Controlling technologies as well as System architecture.

They meet (F2F) at least once a year for a workshop like the above to learn and discuss latest trends and developments on their fields. Often times, external speakers are invited as well.

The “Hannover Messe” is one of the largest trade fairs in the world. It is held on the Hanover Fairground in Hanover, Germany. Typically, there are about 6,500 exhibitors and 250,000 visitors.

In Contrast to “CeBit”, which is also held on the Hanover Fairground, “Hanover Messe” has a strong focus on industry as target audience. The overall topic this year was “Integrated Industry – Creating Value“.

Cambridge Wireless (CW) is a leading industry networking forum based in Cambridge, UK with over 400 members from 31 countries. Their activities are based around a number of special interest groups (SIGs) each focussed on a specific technology and/or market area. This was the kick-off meeting of the Smart and Intelligent Cities SIG entitled “Answering the scale-up challenge for Cities”. It focussed on platforms, both technology and procurement.

The ETSI 5G Network Infrastructure workshop was very well attended and the ETSI Amphitheatre was full.

The workshop focused on the network infrastructure required to support 5G services. It was agreed that NFV (Network Functions Virtualisation), SDN (Software Defined Networks), Service Orchestration and Network Slicing would be key technologies for 5G.
